Everyday, I see ordinary things and events in a way that I have never seen them before. A photograph captures a moment that will never be repeated again. When, through my eye, I see such a moment, I focus on nothing else; for that split second safety is not an issue. I have (with permission) removed the door from a private small plane to lean out and get a better shot; I have forgotten my fear of poisonous creatures and plunged forward into the desert for that moment. In a word, before focusing my camera my mind is focused. My camera has become an extension of my hand with my mind handling the needed hand-eye coordination. I am never tempted to shoot these scenes and events at 50mm or wider. Every scene has within it a dramatic essence that powerfully symbolizes the whole. The extraordinary exists everywhere; I attempt to see the exceptional in the scene and capture it so that others may see it as well. My contribution is an ability to recognize the fragment that will symbolize the whole; I fantasize a scene which summarizes my mood or emotion as I pass through a place and then find that scene and shoot it. |
